Jennifer M. Abrams, 57, of Hilo died July 19 at Hilo Medical Center. Surviving relatives are asked to call Ballard Family Mortuary Hilo at (808) 935-8445.

Caroline Ching, 77, of Kapaau died June 29 at North Hawaii Community Hospital. Born in North Kohala, she was a prep cook at Mauna Lani Resort and attended at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Visitation 8:45-10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 13, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Hawi. Mass at 10 a.m. Casual attire. Survived by her husband, Lester Ching of Kapaau; daughter, Regina Reyes of Kapaau; son, Herbert Ching, of Kapaau; brother, Rudolph Macanas of Hilo; sisters, Florence Adones of California and Linda Naihe of Kapaau; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews and cousins. Maria Franca Gouveia, 92, of Hilo died July 8 at Hawaii Care Choices Pohai Malama Care Center. Born in Portugal, she was a basket weaver and member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. Visitation 9-10 a.m. on Wednesday (Aug. 3) at Dodo Mortuary Chapel. Prayer Service at 10 a.m. Burial to follow at Homelani Memorial Park, Section 5. Casual attire. Leilani Suzanne Hino, 78, of Honokaa died July 7 at home. Born in Honokaa, she was a retired director of community affairs at the Mauna Lani Bay Resorts, formerly worked for the Hawaii Tribune-Herald and West Hawaii Today, member of Honokaa Hongwanji Buddhist Women’s Association and other organizations. Visitation 4-5 p.m. Wednesday (Aug. 3) at Honokaa Hongwanji Mission. Funeral service at 5 p.m. Casual attire; no flowers. Survived by sons, The Rev. R.K. Moki (Dixie Kaetsu) Hino of Wailuku, Maui, and Paul (Rebecca) Noble of Virginia Beach, Va.; sister, Jan Hino of Ahualoa; a granddaughter. Arrangements by Dodo Mortuary.

Masae Kayoda, 92, of Mountain View, formerly of Honokaa and Honolulu, died Sept. 13, 2021, in Mountain View. She was a National Merit Scholar and Honokaa High School, attended the University of Hawaii at Manoa and worked in the tourist and hospitality industries, starting as a waitress at Tropics Restaurant in Waikiki and culminating as an organizer for unionizing hotel and food service workers on the Kona Gold Coast for AFL Union 5. Survived by daughters, Karen Brown and Kim Kayoda; hanai sisters, Debbie Ward and Maile Rogan; a granddaughter; a great-grandson and two great-granddaughters. Arrangements by Dodo Mortuary.

Frederick Madariaga, 90, of Hilo died July 13 at a care home in Hilo. Born in Olaa, he was a welder for the former Puna Sugar Co., U.S. Marine Corps Korean War veteran and member of Puna Covenant Church. Private services held. Survived by son, Alan (Younghey) Madariaga of Las Vegas; daughter, Celia Madariaga of Tustin, Calif.; brother, John (Shirley) Macadangdang of Kaneohe, Oahu; sisters-in-law, Maggie Macadangdang of Hilo and Alice (George) Ishibashi of Torrance, Calif.; nieces and nephews. Phillip Pavao Jr., 46, of Keaau died June 23. Born in Hilo, he was a construction truck driver. Visitation 9:30-10:30 a.m. Saturday (July 30) at Glad Tidings Church. Service at 10:30 a.m. Survived by partner, Sandy Pacheco of Keaau; parents, Phillip and Sharleen Pavao of Pahoa; sons, Zephaniah Pavao, Zander Pavao and Zayden Pavao of Mountain View; daughters, Zysha Pavao and Zyann (Patrick) Pavao of Mountain View; sister Jananette (Keith) Fernandez of Mountain View; a grandchild; aunts, uncles and cousins. Duane Yoshimasa Sugihara, 77, of Hilo, died June 6 at Legacy Hilo Rehabilitation and Nursing Center. Born in Hilo, he was a retired insurance agent from Business Insurance Services, manager of First Insurance Co., member and rooster of the Lehua Jaycees, and member of Halai Kumiai and Hilo United Methodist Church. Private services held. No flowers or Koden (monetary gifts). Survived by wife, Naomi N.
