Gov. David Ige will sign into law today a bill that will raise the hourly minimum wage to $18 by 2028.
House Bill 2510 will, beginning on Oct. 1, initiate a series of incremental wage increases every two years. In October, the minimum wage will rise from the current $10.10 per hour to $12 per hour, with the next increase, to $14 an hour, coming in 2024.
After that, it will rise again to $16 an hour in 2026 before the final increase to $18 in 2028.
The bill also increases the state’s tip credit, wherein tipped employees can be paid a certain margin less than the minimum wage so long as their wages and tips combined are $7 more than the minimum wage. That margin is currently 75 cents, but will increase to $1.50 by 2028.
Ige will also sign Senate Bill 514 today, which will provide a tax credit of up to $300 for taxpayers’ 2021 tax returns.
Both bills will be signed into law at a ceremony at 1 p.m. in Honolulu.
