Various faiths came together to commemorate Memorial Day during the Annual Puna District Interfaith Memorial Day Observance on Saturday morning.

This year marked the 75th anniversary of the monument that is located on the front lawn of Puna Hongwanji Buddhist Temple, which bears the names of those that were killed in action from the Puna District.

Each year families, friends and veterans remember and honor them through all faiths.

Retired U.S. Army Col. Deb Lewis gave the keynote address and spoke about Hayward “Kimo” Peleiholani, who died while serving in the Vietnam War.

Peleiholani will be memorialized at the VFW Post 3830 in Pahoa for his valor and bravery in service.

“When we share their stories, these men and women become a part of our collective identity of our hometowns. They are etched in the pride and memories of loved ones, and kindled in the hearts of many more,” Lewis said during her address. “Woven into the fabric of our country, are those who died wearing the cloth of our nation.”
