COVID cases rise; more than 850 in Hawaii County over the past seven days

More than 7,000 new COVID-19 cases were reported statewide over the last seven days, with Hawaii County reporting 850 new cases. This is an increase of 87 new cases on the Big Island since last week.

Two new deaths were reported in Hawaii County as well, one male and one female both between the ages of 60 and 69.

According to Department of Health data, 7,149 new cases were reported in Hawaii between May 11 and today, an increase in over 1,300 from the week prior. The new statewide active case count over the past 14 days is 11,806.

For Hilo’s 96720 ZIP code, there have been 479 new cases over the past 14-day period.

Twelve COVID-related deaths have been reported in Hawaii in the last seven days, bringing the statewide death toll to 1,407. Hawaii County reported a death toll of 189 throughout the pandemic.

According to the Department of Education, there have been 2,014 new cases reported throughout the state’s 257 public schools between May 8 and May 17. This is the eighth straight week of increased case counts for the DOE schools.

Honokaa High & Intermediate School reported the highest case count on the Big Island, with 22 current cases reported between May 8 and May 17, followed by Waiakea High School, which reported 19 new cases within the same period.
