HHSAA softball: Kamehameha clobbers Kaimuki to reach quarters

Kamehameha hammered Kaimuki 17-2 in the Division II state softball first round on Wednesday on Maui.

Emily Hora allowed one run on three hits and two walks and struck out seven in five innings for the win.

Keanu Huihui batted 3 for 3 with five RBIs and three runs, Napualaiku Ho went 3 for with four RBIs and three runs, Kahiwa Ili, Rhian Ogawa, and Kailee Wagner each added two hits for the Warriors (7-2).

BIIF runner-up Kamehameha plays No. 3 seed Waipahu in the quarterfinals at noon on Thursday.

Kira Moananu gave up 17 runs on 15 hits and one walk in the loss.

After a scoreless first inning, Kamehameha went to work in the second. Ho’s single scored Jeyla Bettis-Shigeishi, who had reached on a hit, and Wagner’s hit plated Ho.

Huihui’s three-run triple highlighted a third inning in which the Warriors scored five times. Wagner hit a two-run double.

Their biggest inning was a sixth-run fourth, an inning that included six hits (Hora, single; Kahiwa Ili, double; Rhian Ogawa, two-run single; Huihui, RBI double; Ho, two-run single; Tia Tanimoto, RBI hit).

Aiea 17, Honokaa 0: Taja Souza pitched three no-hit innings, and Chrijon Peneuta pitched two innings of one-hit relief for Na Alii.

Cayleigh Naito batted 1 for 3 with a two-run homer, and Trinity Caporus-Sant went 2 for 4 with three RBIs to lead Aiea, which pounded out 11 hits.

Maile Especjo went five innings in the loss for the Dragons (4-5), who committed nine errors.

Honokaa plays a consolation game at 10 a.m. on Thursday.

Also Thursday, top-seeded Hawaii Prep plays Waimea in a 7 p.m. quarterfinal. The Menehune beat Nanakuli 11-0 in the first round.

Division I

Campbell 11, Kealakehe 1: The Sabers eliminated the BIIF champion Waveriders 11-1 in five innings at McKinley High on Oahu.

Kealakehe finished with a 8-2 record.
