Hawaii Island is under a flood advisory until 6 p.m. tonight, although it could be extended by the National Weather Service.
At 2:48 p.m. today, radar and automated rain gauges indicated heavy rain over portions of the Hilo and Puna districts. Rain was falling at a rate of an inch to 2 inches per hour.
Some locations that could experience flooding include Hilo, Hawaiian Paradise Park, Honokaa, Mountain View, Keaau, Glenwood, Hawaiian Acres, Papaikou, Orchidland Estates, Volcano, Pepeekeo, Honomu, Hakalau, Pahoa, Ninole, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, Laupahoehoe, Ookala and Paauilo.
Heavy rain remains in the forecast for tonight and Tuesday, according to the weather service.
In addition, Maunakea Access Road is closed to the public at the Visitor Information Station at the 9,200-foot level due to extensive fog, ice and snow on the road, high humidity with freezing temperatures and thunderstorms.
Rangers will continue monitoring road and weather conditions and will reopen the road to the public when the conditions are safe.
