Joanne Kikue Arita, 74, of Hilo died Feb. 8 at home. Born in Olaa, she was a secretary for the former Arita Auto Repair, clerk for Prudential Insurance and cafeteria worker for Sodexo Hawaii at the University of Hawaii at Hilo. Private services held. No flowers or koden (monetary gifts). Survived by brother, Alan (Gail) Shiraishi of Hilo; sister, Stella (Jerry) Itamura of Torrance, Calif.; sisters-in-law, Gwen Santos and Cathy Arita of Pepeekeo, Roxanne Nagasako of Hilo; nieces and nephews. Manuel Bernabe Asencion, 95, of Hilo died Feb. 20 at Hilo Medical Center. Born in San Nicolas, Ilocos Norte, Philippines, he was a retired seed cutter for the former Hamakua Sugar Co., U.S. Army Korean War veteran, and member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and American Legion Post No. 4 Kohala. Visitation 8:30-9:30 a.m. Monday (April 25) at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Mass at 9:30 a.m. Committal service to follow 11:30 a.m. at Hawaii Veterans Cemetery No. 2 Pavilion. Casual attire. Joseph Eugene Ayers, 75, of Mountain View died March 28 at Hilo Medical Center. Born in Turlock, Calif., he was a heavy equipment mechanic for Island Princess Macadamia, owner/operator of Kahealani Ranch and U.S. Army Vietnam War veteran and Bronze Star recipient. Private services held. Survived by wife, Lora Ayers of Mountain View; daughters, Amy Marie (Phillip) Ayers-Van Loo of Buxton, Ore., Jeanette Olivia (Dion) Ayers-Kawakami of Mountain View; sister, Jean Ann (Doug) Bucher of McArthur, Calif., Sarah (Paul) Curtin of Tyler, Texas; eight grandchildren; nieces and nephews. Tandra Lyn Brooks, 33, of Mountain View, died March 16 at Hilo Medical Center. She was born in Haiku, Maui. Memorial gathering noon-4 p.m. Sunday (April 24) at Onekahakaha Beach Park large pavilion. Patrick Kalani Tan Chu, 79, of Hilo died March 15 at home. Born and raised in Honolulu, he was a circuit designer for the former GTE Hawaiian Telephone, technician for City and County of Honolulu Wastewater Management Division, U.S. Army veteran and amateur radio operator, call sign KH6KL. Visitation 10-11 a.m. Saturday (April 23) at Church of the Holy Apostles. Funeral service at 11 a.m. Survived by wife, Penelope of Hilo; daughter, Theresa (Tony) Dickerson of Indiana; sons, Shannon (Christy) Chu and Edward (Kekapa) Shonk of Kaneohe, Oahu, Ian Corey (Jane) Chu and Preston (Jenny) Chu of Honolulu; sister, Pasha Leong of Las Vegas; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Kelsey Nicole Palisbo, 38, of Kapolei, Oahu, died Feb. 26 on Oahu. Born in Hilo, she was an office manager at Craig’s Air Conditioning and member of Christ Embassy Hawaii.
