Police: Bicyclist killed in Bayfront crash

Police say a 61-year-old bicyclist died today of injuries she received from an early morning collision with a sport-utility vehicle in Hilo.

The collision occurred at about 2:50 a.m. today on Bayfront Highway, just south of Waianuenue Avenue.

According to police, an eastbound Toyota SUV struck a bicyclist that was traveling westward in the eastbound lane. At the time of the collision the roadway was dark and the area was dry.

The bicyclist, Danielle Sinor, was taken by ambulance to Hilo Medical Center with traumatic injuries. She was pronounced dead at 12:57 p.m.

An autopsy has been ordered to determine the exact cause of death.

The 65-year-old woman driving the SUV was uninjured.

Further investigation will be conducted to determine any contributing factors. The investigation is classified as a negligent homicide.

Sinor’s death is the 10th traffic fatality this year compared to five fatalities during this same period last year.
