Vuls surge late in second game to secure sweep of Holy Names

Conor Meehan pitched four scoreless innings, and Ty Honda and Takashi Umino combined for five hitless inning to spark the UH-Hilo baseball team to a 5-1 win over Holy Names on Wednesday at Wong Stadium.

The Vulcans rallied to take the second game, winning 10-7 on the strength of a four-run eighth inning. Bradyn Yoshida and Brett Komatsu and led off with singles, and Casey Yamauchi was hit by a pitch. Joe Gallagher’s sacrifice fly tied the score, Kekaulik Kalua was hit by a pitch to give the Vulcans (15-6) the lead another sacrifice fly by Chris Aubort and a balk brought home two more runs.

Meehan gave up four hits and four walks and struck out one in the opener. Honda allowed an unearned run on one walk and struck out two in three innings for the win. Umino pitched two innings, walked one, and whiffed two for his first save.

In the first inning, Yamauchi stole third base and scored on catcher Brent Rigtrup’s throwing error.

Mason Campbell hit an RBI single in the fourth.

Gallagher had a two-run double in the sixth, and an RBI sacrifice fly in the eighth.

Yamauchi batted 4 for 4 with two runs scored, Gallagher went 2 for 4 with three RBIs, Peterson was 2 for 3 with a run, and Bradyn Yoshida batted 3 for 4 with a run for the Vulcans, who had 13 hits.

Colton Combs batted 2 for 5 for the Hawks, who had four hits and left 13 on base.

Daniel Hopkins recorded one out and gave up a run in the loss.

The two teams play another doubleheader at 3:30 p.m. Thursday at Wong Stadium.
