During the week of Feb. 28-March 6, Hawaii Island police arrested 29 motorists for DUI. Nine of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident. One was younger than 21.
The numbers of arrests by district were: South Hilo, 12; Kona, nine; Puna, five; North Kohala, two; and South Kohala, one.
So far this year, there have been 213 DUI arrests compared to 219 during the same period last year, a decrease of 2.7%.
There have been 128 major accidents so far this year compared to 135 during the same period last year, a decrease of 5.2%.
To date,there have been eight official traffic fatalities, compared to five fatalities for the same time last year, an increase of 60%.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
