Baseball: UHH salvages split of doubleheader at HPU

Joseph Gallagher stroked a two-run, two-out double in the sixth inning Friday against his former team, and UH-Hilo beat Hawaii Pacific 7-4 to split a doubleheader in Waipahu, Oahu.

Earlier in the inning, the Vulcans (10-4) used two walks an error and a wild pitch to break a 4-4 tie.

Christian DeJesus (1-0) threw 100 pitches through six innings, allowing seven hits, four runs and four walks with six strikeouts. Kea, the Vulcans all-time saves leader with 25, struck out the side in the seventh.

Mason Campbell hit a two-run double in the fourth, Gallagher finished with three RBIs and Casey Yamauchi collected two of his team’s seven hits in the nonconference game, with two walks and two runs scored.

Earlier, three Sharks pitchers combined to subdue UHH in an 8-0 loss that dropped its Pacific West Conference record to 0-2. HPU (8-4, 2-0) scored single runs in the fourth, fifth and six innings before erupting for five runs in the seventh.

Kyle Alcorn allowed five hits and three runs, two earned, with two walks and two strikeouts in six innings to lose his first decision of the season.

The teams close the series with a nonconference doubleheader at 10 a.m. Saturday.
