Sharks beat Vuls in baseball 11-5

Giancarlo Cortez pitched 5 1/3 innings of three-run relief to spark Hawaii Pacific over UH-Hilo 11-6 in a PacWest game on Thursday at Hans L’Orange Park on Oahu.

Jack O’Brien started and pitched 3 2/3 innings of two-run ball in a no-decision.

The Vulcans used five pitchers, and four combined to surrender 11 runs on 13 hits and three walks over 8 1/3 innings.

James Yamasaki started and gave up four runs in 2 2/3 innings. Aaron Davies followed and allowed two runs in an inning. Takashi Umino recorded two outs and yielded three runs. Ty Honda gave up two runs in three innings. Jamieson Hirayama got two outs and didn’t allow any runs.

The Sharks (7-3, 1-0 PacWest) scored four runs in the third, two in the fourth, three in the fifth, and two in the eighth.

Richard Higa batted 3 for 5 with two RBIs, and Jonathan Lucio was 3 for 4 with an RBI to lead the Sharks, who had 13 hits.

Eric Peterson batted 3 for 4, Joe Gallagher went 2 for 5 with two RBIs, and Bradyn Yoshida had two RBIs for the Vulcans, who had seven hits and stranded eight on base.

The two teams play doubleheaders starting at 2 p.m. Friday and at 10 a.m. Saturday at Hans L’Orange Park.

Basketball

The UHH men’s and women’s basketball teams play their final games before the PacWest tournament Friday against Chaminade at Hilo Civic.

The women’s game starts things off at 5 p.m.
