Police arrest 24 for DUI

During the week of Feb. 7-13, Hawaii Island police arrested 24 motorists for DUI. Three of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident. Four were younger than 21.

The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, 12; South Hilo, six; Puna, three; and North Kohala, South Kohala and Ka‘u, one each.

So far this year, there have been 129 DUI arrests compared to 163 during the same period last year, a decrease of 20.9%.

There have been 87 major accidents so far this year compared to 88 during the same period last year, a decrease of 1.1%.

To date, there have been seven official traffic fatalities, compared to five fatalities for the same time last year, an increase of 40%.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
