Police arrest 19 for DUI

During the week of Jan. 17-23, Hawaii Island police arrested 19 motorists for DUI. Two of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident. One of the drivers was under the age of 21.

The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, 13; South Hilo, three; Puna, Ka‘u and North Kohala, one each.

So far this year, there have been 69 DUI arrests compared to 83 during the same period last year, a decrease of 16.9%.

There have been 44 major accidents so far this year compared to 41 during the same period last year, an increase of 7.3%.

To date, there have been two official traffic fatalities, the same as at this time last year.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
