Police arrest 33 for DUI

During the week of Oct. 25-31, Hawaii Island police arrested 33 motorists for DUI. Ten of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident. One was younger than 21.

The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, 12; South Hilo, eight; Puna and South Kohala, six each; and North Kohala, one.

So far this year, there have been 897 DUI arrests compared to 819 during the same period last year, an increase of 9.5%.

There have been 666 major accidents so far this year compared to 647 during the same period last year, an increase of 2.9%.

To date, there were have been 22 official traffic fatalities compared to 13 fatalities for the same time last year, an increase of 69.2%.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
