Hilo man killed in Monday motorcycle crash identified

Police have identified a motorcyclist who was killed in a traffic collision in Hilo Monday evening.

According the Hawaii Police Department, the man killed was William Townsend, a 39-year-old Hilo resident.

Townsend was driving a motorcycle eastward on Kaumana Drive when he skidded on gravel and fell from the bike at the intersection of Kaumana and Saddle Road.

A westbound driver on Saddle Road swerved to avoid the motorcycle, but instead struck Townsend, who was wearing a black hoodie and no helmet. He was declared dead at Hilo Medical Center shortly thereafter.
