Theodore Allen “Mr. B.” Brattstrom, 68, of Volcano died Oct. 2 at home. Born in Santa Monica, Calif., he was a science teacher at Pearl City and Ka‘u high schools and Keaau Middle School, ham radio operator, amateur astronomer, Peace Corps volunteer in Nepal, traveler and a penguin enthusiast. Chung Cha “Kim” Dempsey, 79, of Kailua-Kona died Oct. 8 at Kona Community Hospital. Born in Tamyang Kun, South Korea, she was a homemaker, former U.S. Bank employee and volunteer for St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Albany, Ore., and St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church, and member of Catholic Daughters of America. Funeral Mass 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 13, 10 a.m. at St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church in Kona. Survived by sisters, Sin Cha Cummins of Vancouver, Wash., Kyong Hui Kim and Su Pok Kim of South Korea; brothers, Yong Sun Kim and Yong Hun Kim of South Korea; two grandchildren. Alice Kieko Furusho, 94, of Waikoloa died July 22 at Hale Ho‘ola Hamakua. Born in Hilo, she was Pahala’s only hairdresser until retirement and managed the Pahala Theater. Private services. Conrad Kaikulani Takeshi Kelii, 46, of Hilo died Aug. 31 at Hilo Medical Center. Kuniaki Richard Machida, 94, of Ewa Beach, Oahu, formerly of Ookala, died July 13. He was a retired instrument specialist and factory superintendent of the former Hamakua Sugar Co., worked for the former Kaiwiki and Laupahoehoe sugar companies, former first lieutenant in the Army and Hawaii National Guard, Laupahoehoe High School alumnus, hunter, fisherman, builder and repairman.
