Police arrest 18 for DUI

During the week of Oct. 4-10, Hawaii Island police arrested 18 motorists for DUI. Seven of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident. Two were younger than 21.

The numbers of arrests by district were: South Hilo, seven; Kona, six; South Kohala, three; and Puna, two.

So far this year, there have been 826 DUI arrests compared to 748 during the same period last year, an increase of 10.4%.

There have been 616 major accidents so far this year compared to 594 during the same period last year, an increase of 3.7%.

To date, there have been 20 official traffic fatalities, compared to 13 fatalities for the same time last year, an increase of 53.8%

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
