Police arrest 21 for DUI

During the week of Sept. 20-26, Hawaii Island police arrested 21 motorists for driving under the influence.

Five of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident. Three were younger than 21.

The numbers of arrests by district were: South Hilo, 14; Kona, three; Puna, two; North Kohala and South Kohala, one each.

So far this year, there have been 791 DUI arrests compared to 699 during the same period last year, an increase of 13.2%.

There have been 586 major accidents so far this year compared with 566 during the same period last year, an increase of 3.5%.

To date, there have been 18 official traffic fatalities, compared to 13 fatalities for the same time last year, an increase of 38.5%.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
