Police arrest 13 for DUI

During the week of Sept. 13-19, Hawaii Island police arrested 13 motorists for DUI. Three of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident. None were younger than 21.

The numbers of arrests by district were: Puna, four; Kona and South Kohala, three each; South Hilo, two; and Hamakua, one.

So far this year, there have been 770 DUI arrests compared to 680 during the same period last year, an increase of 13.2%.

There have been 565 major accidents so far this year compared to 548 during the same period last year, an increase of 3.1%.

To date, there have been 16 official traffic fatalities, compared to 13 fatalities for the same time last year, an increase of 23.1%.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
