Last week, all Hawaii public libraries and offices began implementing requirements listed in Gov. David Ige’s latest executive order.
Visitors 12 years and older to public libraries and support offices must provide valid photo identification and proof of full vaccination, or a negative COVID-19 test taken within 72 hours if not they are not fully vaccinated.
Patrons must provide proof of an official PCR test. Tests taken at home will not be accepted.
Visitors 5 years old and older must wear a face mask that covers the nose, mouth and chin at all times in the library, practice hand hygiene and physically distance themselves from others.
Visitors who cannot enter the library may be provided with assistance at the door.
According to a press release from the Hawaii State Public Library System, library staff will make every effort to answer questions, assist with photo-copying, pull requested items and provide checkout and account services for those who must wait outside.
“Most everyone has been very understanding when they learn they cannot enter,” said librarian Gretchen Andrews of the Hilo Public Library. “Many of our regular patrons have noted that they like the change and feel safer now when they visit the library.”
Visitors to rural libraries might not be able to enter day-to-day if the library is short-staffed, but employees will continue to help patrons outside the building.
The Hilo Public Library has a capacity of 20 and is open weekly from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.
