Members of the public are invited to attend a virtual public meeting this week to discuss the University of Hawaii’s plans to decommission the Hoku Kea telescope on Maunakea.
A draft environmental assessment for the removal of the teaching telescope was released earlier this month. UH will host an online presentation and question-and-answer period about the decommissioning project on Wednesday, Sept. 22.
Attending the meeting will be UH-Hilo Center for Maunakea Stewardship Executive Director Greg Chun, and officials from SSFM, the consulting company hired for the project’s planning and design phases.
The virtual meeting will be held from 5:30 to 7 p.m., and can be found at hokukea.konveio.com, where members of the public also can read the environmental assessment and send comments.
The public comment period closes Oct. 8.
