Susumu Nakagawa, 98, of Hilo died Sept. 22, 2020,CQ at Yukio Okutsu State Veterans Home. Born in Hilo, he was a retired U.S. Department of Agriculture research entomologist, U.S. Army veteran of Co. C, 100th Battalion, 442d Infantry Regiment and member of Hilo Meishoin Buddhist Temple and 442nd Veterans Club. Visitation 2:30-4 p.m. Monday (Sept. 20) at Dodo Mortuary Chapel. Memorial service at 4 p.m. Seating is limited. Casual attire; face masks and social distancing required. No flowers or koden (monetary gifts). Ellen Kinuko Nakamura, 74, of Hilo died Sept. 1 at The Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu. Born in Hilo, she was a retired state tax examiner and member of University Heights Kumiai. Nakamura of Hilo; son, Scott (Sonia) Nakamura of Hillsboro, Ore.; mother-in-law, Chiyoko Nakamura of Hilo; brother-in-law, Wayne Nakamura of Hilo; a granddaughter; an uncle and aunt; nephews and nieces. Oliver Kanoelehua Sanborn, 69, of Waianae, Oahu, died July 31 at home. Born in Hilo, he was a U.S. Marine Corps and National Guard veteran. Urn committal service 9 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 23, at Hawaii Veterans Cemetery No. 2 in Hilo. Survived by wife, Lurline M. Aila-Sanborn; daughters, Rose Sanborn, Lily (John) Bersabal and Tiare Arriesgado; brothers Lani Sanborn, John (Pam) Sanborn and Reynold (Myong) Sanborn; sisters, Lavern Sanborn, Myrtle (Rudy) Castilan, Gayleen Agliam and Joanne (Manuel) Luiz; 11 grandchildren; nieces, nephews and cousins.

Michael Takeo Taniguchi, 74, of Hilo died Aug. 24 at Hilo Medical Center. Born in Hilo, he was a retired assistant manager for ABC Stores and Hawaii Army National Guard. Private services. Tommy Anderson Tinker, 88, of Kapaau, died August 22 at Kona Community Hospital. Born in Van Nuys, Calif., he was a retired U.S. Marine Corps lieutenant colonel, commercial pilot for Pacific Airlines and Northwest Airlines, a diver, skier and past president of the Merchants Association and Kohala Hospital Community Foundation Board. No service planned at this time. Ocean scattering of ashes at a later date. No flowers; memorial donations to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital in Memphis, Tenn. Survived by wife, Cynthia Smith of Kapaau; son, H.G. Misako “Baban” Yamamoto, 94, of Keaau died Aug. 26 at Hale Anuenue Restorative Care Center. Born in Honohina, she was a retired harvester and grafter for Mauna Loa Macadamia Nut Corp., member of Puna Hongwanji and loved anthuriums, orchids, koi, music, and Las Vegas. Survived by daughters, Jocelyn (Michael) Kasamoto of Honolulu, Cyd (Paul) Arrington of Kauai and Gail (Scot) Rosehill of Kurtistown; son, Miles Yamamoto of Keaau; son-in-law, Steve Hurt of Hilo; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
