The Hawaiian Volcano Observatory has lowered its alert level for Kilauea as seismic activity around the volcano decreases.
HVO on Tuesday raised the volcano alert level for the volcano from “advisory” to “watch” after a series of minor earthquakes was detected around the caldera. However, on Thursday HVO returned its alert level for the volcano back to “advisory” as those earthquakes have diminished.
According to an HVO statement Thursday morning, earthquake activity and ground deformation levels had decreased over the preceding 24 hours, indicating that the immediate potential for a volcanic eruption has lessened.
As of Thursday afternoon, only three earthquakes had been detected in the vicinity of Kilauea caldera within the previous day, a far cry from Tuesday, when as many as 10 earthquakes per hour were recorded.
HVO will continue to monitor the situation.
