A man is dead after the pickup truck he was driving crossed the centerline of Highway 19 between Honokaa and Waimea and collided head-on with a school bus, police said.

According to Capt. Reynold Kahalewai of Hamakua Patrol Division, police received the report of the collision near the 49-mile marker of the highway at 4:53 a.m.

There were no passengers on the bus, police said. The driver, a 52-year-old man, was transported to North Hawaii Community Hospital. There’s no report on his condition.
