Police arrest 19 for DUI

During the week of June 21-27, Hawaii Island police arrested 19 motorists for DUI. Five of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident.

Two were younger than 21.

The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, seven; Puna, six; South Hilo, four; and South Kohala, two.

So far this year, there have been 578 DUI arrests compared to 424 during the same period last year, an increase of 36.3%.

There have been 381 major accidents so far this year compared to 394 during the same period last year, a decrease of 3.3%.

To date, there have been 12 official traffic fatalities, compared to 10 fatalities for the same time last year, an increase of 20%.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
