Police arrest 16 for DUI

During the week of June 14-20, 2021, Hawaii Island police arrested 16 motorists for DUI. Six of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident. None was younger than 21.

The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, nine; Puna, four; South Hilo, two; and North Kohala, one.

So far this year, there have been 559 DUI arrests compared to 402 during the same period last year, an increase of 39.1%.

There have been 367 major accidents so far this year compared to 381 during the same period last year, a decrease of 3.7%.

To date, there have been 12 official traffic fatalities, compared to nine fatalities for the same time last year, an increase of 33.3%.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
