Woman killed in Puna moped crash Sunday

An unidentified woman was killed Sunday evening after crashing a moped on Government Beach Road in Puna.

According to a police report, a woman driving a moped north on Government Beach Road veered off the left shoulder, struck a tree and fell into a four-foot ditch. Police responded to the incident at 5:08 p.m. and found the woman unresponsive with severe head trauma.

The woman was taken to Hilo Medical Center and was pronounced dead at 9:05 p.m. An autopsy has been ordered to determine exact cause of death.

The woman was not wearing a helmet at the time of the incident, say police investigators.

This is the Big Island’s 12th traffic fatality of the year. By this time in 2020, there had been only 10 traffic fatalities.
