The hits keep coming for Hilo’s Jacob Igawa – and, unfortunately, for the University of Hawaii baseball team.
The Rainbow Warrior limp to the to the finish line after getting swept Saturday in a doubleheader at Cal Poly. The ’Bows (24-25, 16-2 Big West) have lost four in a row heading into Sunday’s season finale in San Luis Obispo, Calif.
Kamehameha-Hawaii alum Tai Atkins took the loss in the first game, a 5-4 setback. Relieving in the ninth, Atkins induced a lineout and then hit Connor Gurnik to load the bases. Atkins’ first two pitches to Cole Cabrera were balls, so coach Mike Trapasso replaced Atkins with Tyler Dyball, who threw two more balls to Cole Cabrera to end the game.
UH had taken the lead in the ninth with a two-run rally. Igawa, a Waiakea alum who finished 2 for 4 with an RBI, started it with a single, and Waiakea alum Stone Miyao delivered a pinch-hit RBI single to put UH in front.
In the second game, a 14-4 loss, Igawa went 2 for 3 with an RBI single, raising his average to .321. He went 1 for 3 with an RBI double in Friday’s 13-3 loss.
