Police charged a 30-year-old Puna man with felony assault for allegedly hacking his father with a machete on Wednesday.

Officers responded at about 4:35 p.m. to a business in Pahoa on the report of an injured man. A 62-year-old man, who had multiple lacerations to his arms, hands and head, told police his son, Jason Wayne Benkosky, attacked him with a machete.

The injured man was taken to Hilo Medical Center for treatment of his injuries, which were described as serious.

Benkosky was arrested without incident at his Hawaiian Paradise Park home and later charged with first- and second-degree assault.

Benkosky’s bail was set at $35,000 and his initial appearance is scheduled for today in Hilo District Court.
