Local businesses are partnering with an Oahu company to bring the silver screen outdoors so residents can break away from their pandemic-wary homes and watch a movie under the Big Island stars — or at least from the comfort of their own cars. Drive In Movie Night, hosted by Krave Marketing and five Big Island-based businesses, began last weekend.

The family-friendly event runs each weekend through May 2. It offers ohana a chance to get out of the house and wheel up to an ultimate movie experience.

“There’s been nothing like this before on the Big Island,” said Ben Marumoto, owner of Krave Marketing, which has hosted the same experience on Oahu, where it’s been so well received, expanding the platform to the neighboring islands seemed only natural.

“We want this to be the start of something more lasting,” Marumoto said.

It’s also a chance to connect with local businesses that are partnering to help put it on as a thank you to the community that helped them during tough economic times. Sponsors include Tony Honda, Connect Hawaii, Farmers Insurance Hawaii, Bay Clinic, Altres and The Grand Naniloa.

“Helping bring family entertainment to the community I support — and that supports me — is a perfect fit,” said Minoo Elison, principal broker of real estate brokerage firm Connect Hawaii.

Tickets cost $30-$38, depending on popcorn, and can be ordered online at bigislandmovies.com.

Shows include “Moana,” “The Greatest Showman” and “The Goonies.” Movies in West Hawaii are shown at Tony Honda in Kailua-Kona. Hilo shows will take place at The Grand Naniloa golf course.
