Police identified a man shot to death Monday at his Aloha Estates subdivision residence in Puna as 59-year-old Jay Allen Freeman of Volcano.

Officers responded shortly before 1 p.m. Monday to a Nau Nani Road address in Volcano after receiving a report of a man having been shot. Arriving officers found Freeman dead in his yard upon their arrival, police said.

A suspect, 32-year-old Daris Paul Pacheco, was taken into custody at his neighboring residence without incident at about 3:15 p.m.

He remains in custody on suspicion of second-degree murder as detectives continue to investigate the shooting.

Police have 48 hours from the time of Pacheco’s arrest to charge him or must, by law, release him pending further investigation.

An autopsy concluded Freeman died from a gunshot wound to the chest and manner of death was homicide.
