UPDATE 5:30 p.m.: Police have identified the suspect in a fatal shooting this afternoon as 32-year-old Daris Paul Pacheco of Nau Naui Road.

Pacheco, who was taken into custody at about 4 p.m., was arrested on suspicion of second-degree murder. He has not been charged. Detectives remain at the scene and are investigating.

According to Lt. Rio Amon-Wilkins of the Hilo Criminal Investigations Section, the victim was a neighbor, whom Amon-Wilkins described as a middle-aged male.

Amon-Wilkins said the victim was shot on the property of his residence and witnesses reportedly saw Pacheco return to his own home carrying a firearm.

The Special Response Team — the police SWAT unit — was called to the scene at about 2 p.m. because the suspect had reportedly barricaded himself inside his home.

Amon-Wilkins said police haven’t, as of yet, recovered a firearm, adding, “we’re in the process of obtaining a search warrant on the property.”

Detectives remain at the scene, Amon-Wilkins said.
