During the week of April 5-11, Hawaii Island police arrested 22 motorists for DUI. Four of the drivers were involved in traffic accidents; none were younger than 21.
The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, seven; South Hilo, six; South Kohala, five; Puna, three; and North Kohala, one.
So far this year, there have been 353 DUI arrests compared to 273 during the same period last year, an increase of 29.3%.
There have been 220 major accidents so far this year compared to 251 during the same period last year, a decrease of 12.4%.
To date, there have been eight official traffic fatalities compared to seven at the same time last year, an increase of 14.3%.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
