A Keaau man died following a single-vehicle crash Saturday in Ka‘u. The accident occurred .3 miles west (makai) of the 68.5 mile marker on Highway 11.
The Hawaii Police Department has identified the man as 60-year-old Ray Allen Riveira Sr.
Responding to a 5:13 p.m. call, police determined that a blue Harley-Davidson motorcycle heading east drove off the right shoulder of the roadway and down a slight embankment, striking several rocks.
Riveira was transported to the Kona Community Hospital where he was later pronounced dead at 9:40 p.m., according to reports. He was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.
An autopsy has been ordered to determine the exact cause of death.
The Area II Traffic Enforcement Unit has initiated a coroner’s inquest investigation and is asking for anyone who may have witnessed the collision to contact Officer Severo Ines at 326-4646 ext. 229 or email at severo.ines@hawaiicounty.gov. This is the eighth traffic fatality this year compared to six at this time last year.
