Vulcans make big improvement
Kaelyn Uchida and the UH-Hilo women’s golf team accomplshed at least one of their goals on Maui.
They hunted down the Sharks.
Led by Uchida, four Vulcans had their best rounds this week at Kaanapali Golf Course, boosting UHH past Hawaii Pacific and into fourth place in the final standings of the Anuenue Spring Break Classic.
Uchida made the biggest jump, firing a 76 to move into 16th place overall. It was her best round of the young season, putting her at 29-over for the tournament.
UH-Hilo’s score of 330 on Wednesday far surpassed their Monday (343) and Tuesday (365) rounds. The Vuls moved ahead of the Sharks by 18 strokes. UC Davis was the runaway winner at 14-over, followed by Hawaii (34-over), and Portland State (48-over).
In addition to Uchida’s big leap, Tia Kualii also improved (85-86-84), as did Kasumi Goto (88-93-83) and Tori Hironaga (90-97-87) on the final day.
The Aggies’ Madison Wood claimed medalist honors, closing with a 73 to finish at 2-under and a shot ahead of teammate Jackie Lucena (74).
Hilo hiring
Hilo High School is accepting applications for a football coach and a girls water polo coach.
