Police arrest 24 for DUI

During the week of March 15-21, Hawaii Island police arrested 24 motorists for DUI. Four of the drivers were involved in traffic accidents. One of the drivers was younger than 21.

The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, eight; South Kohala, seven; South Hilo, five; Puna, three; and North Kohala, one.

So far this year, there have been 283 DUI arrests compared to 256 during the same period last year, an increase of 10.6%.

There have been 166 major accidents so far this year compared to 224 during the same period last year, a decrease of 25.9%.

To date, there have been six official fatal traffic fatalities compared to seven fatalities during the same period, a decrease of 14.3%.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
