Police arrest 27 motorists for DUI

During the week of March 1-7, Hawaii Island police arrested 27 motorists for DUI. Eight of the drivers were involved in traffic accidents; two were younger than 21.

The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, 13; Hilo, five; South Kohala, four; Puna, three; and North Kohala, two.

So far this year, there have been 228 DUI arrests compared to 218 during the same period last year, an increase of 4.6%.

There have been 138 major accidents so far this year compared to 191 during the same period last year, a decrease of 27.7%.

To date, there have been five official traffic fatalities compared to six during the same period last year, a decrease of 16.7%.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
