Heavy weather watches in effect throughout weekend

The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood watch from 6 p.m. this evening through Sunday afternoon for most of the windward side of the Big Island.

According to the National Weather Service a “prolonged period of rainfall” is likely throughout the weekend, and residents are warned to be cautious around flood-prone roads and other low-lying areas.

The National Weather Service has also issued a winter weather advisory for the Maunakea and Mauna Loa summits until noon on Monday. Periods of snow and freezing rain are to be expected, and travelers should be extremely cautious when approaching the mountains.

All Hawaii waters are under a small craft advisory until 6 p.m. Sunday, while a high surf advisory is in effect on windward shores until 6 a.m. Monday.

On the other side of the island, a gale warning is in effect until 6 p.m. this evening, with vessels in leeward waters to be advised of east winds of up to 35 knots.

A high wind advisory is also in effect for most of the island until 6 p.m. this evening, with gusts of up to 45 mph predicted.
