Police arrest 26 for DUI

During the week of Feb. 8-14, Hawaii Island police arrested 26 motorists for DUI. Three of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident. One was younger than 21.

The numbers of arrests by district were: South Hilo; eight; Puna, six; Kona, five; Puna and South Kohala, three each; and North Kohala, one. So far this year, there have been 166 DUI arrests compared to 141 during the same period last year, an increase of 17.7%.

There have been 87 major accidents so far this year compared to 125 during the same period last year, a decrease of 30.4%.

To date, there have been five official traffic fatalities, the same number as of this this time last year.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
