Police arrest 28 for DUI

During the week of Feb. 1-7, Hawaii Island police arrested 28 motorists for DUI. One of the drivers was involved in a traffic accident. Two were younger than 21.

The numbers of arrests by district were: South Hilo, 11; Kona, nine; Puna, six; and South Kohala, two.

So far this year, there have been 138 DUI arrests compared with 116 during the same period last year, an increase of 19%.

There have been 68 major accidents so far this year compared with 108 during the same period last year, a decrease of 37%.

To date, there have been five official traffic fatalities, compared to three fatalities at this time last year, an increase of 66.7%.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
