Edwin Fernandez Sr., 85, of Hilo died Jan. 2 at home. Born in Papaikou, he was a local telephone installer/lineman for GTE Hawaiian Telcom. Geronimo Doctolero Mapalo, 83, of Mountain View died Jan. 6 at home. Born in Asingan, Pangasinan, Philippines, he was a nursery worker for Puna Certified Nursery and member of the Hilo Iloko Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses. Services at a later date. Survived by children, Ofelia Pertubal of Mountain View, Romulo (Veronica) Mapalo, Prescilla (Fredie) Sanchez, Teofilo (Editha) Mapalo, Melecio (Susana) Mapalo and Renante Mapalo of the Philippines; 10 grandchildren; cousins, nieces and nephews. Sadami “Yama” Yamamoto, 92, of Hilo died Jan. 4 at home. Born in Kurtistown, he was a retired laborer from the County of Hawaii, member of the Anela Kumiai, Hilo Seishikan Aikido Club, Higashi Hongwanji Kyodan, and Hilo Daijingu and U.S. Army veteran.
