Off the fence
So I’m driving across Saddle Road, and I’ve already passed the state/county park, when I get the urge.
I remember the old restroom at the hunter station across Maunakea Access Road and stop there. The sign says, restroom closed, use porta-potty.
I look around, but the only ones I see are across the highway. I could have relieved myself behind the building, but out of respect for this sensitive area, I walk across the highway, but the two orange porta-pottys there have the doors blocked or locked with cable.
I look across the access road at two over there, but at that moment two big dogs come running out. I’m contemplating walking past them when two big kanaka come out of their tents, and one yells, “Get outta here.”
I assume he is talking to me and not the dogs, and I can take a hint, but where is the aloha? And where is “here”? Is it his illegal camp? The mountain? The island?
Well, no, I’m not leaving my Puna home, but I can tell you if I was ever on the fence, I’m not now.
Congratulations, you just made another enemy to your cause. And that’s a shame.

False and misleading
I want people of Hawaii to know that the letter to the editor by Allen Russell of Hilo in the Jan. 10 paper (Your Views, Tribune-Herald) is terribly misleading.
He states: “I understand but do not condone rioting and mob-storming by Black Lives Matter, Antifa or any other entity or group.”
Allen, I will eat my hat, jump off the nearest cliff — you name it — if the FBI arrests anyone from BLM or Antifa with respect to the Jan 6. attempted coup encouraged and brought about by Donald Trump.
The FBI is arresting people from Proud Boys, including Nick Ochs, Hawaii’s Proud Boys founder in Honolulu, and Doug Jensen, from Des Moines, Iowa, my home state, Iowa’s QAnon chairperson.
QAnon “shaman” Jake Angeli, who has also been arrested, has been forced to admit he is not Antifa or BLM. Yes, there are those, like Lin Wood, QAnon’s attorney, who would like to blame Antifa.
Local and state lawmakers from various states are resigning because they have been caught on Facebook in attendance and participating. States and cities nationwide are finding out their own police officers flew to D.C. to participate. These are police officers who knew Capitol security officers, their brothers in uniform, were out numbered and being abused by the largely white crowds! One officer died.
I say largely white, because I did see one black person, Vernon Jones, Georgia’s state representative, who was being tossed about over the heads of mobsters and enjoying it! He is being asked to resign.
Four people from my husband’s hometown, Spencer, Iowa, made Spencer Daily Reporter front-page news with their first-person account of what happened in D.C., because they flew out to attend what they felt would be Trump’s last “rally.”
It wasn’t a “rally.” It was a call to Trump’s cult followers to instigate an overthrow of our democracy. These four people were not members of BLM or Antifa.
Allen, you are as bad as Trump with putting out false and misleading information.
