Police arrest 26 for DUI

During the week of Jan. 4-10, Hawaii Island police arrested 26 motorists for DUI. One of the drivers was involved in a traffic accident. None was younger than 21. The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, 14; South Hilo, six; Puna, four; Ka‘u and South Kohala, one each.

So far this year, there have been 45 DUI arrests compared to 22 during the same period last year. This is an increase of 104.5%.

There have been 16 major accidents so far this year compared to 36 during the same period last year, a decrease of 55.6%.

To date, there has been one official traffic fatality, the same as this time last year.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
