On the same day the Oahu Interscholastic Association officially announced the cancellation of fall and winter sports – including football – for the 2020-2021 school year, the BIIF’s athletic directors talked about a path forward as well.

It was unclear, however, what, if any, decisions were reached.

The BIIF’s athletic director’s met Tuesday, the AD of a Big Island high school confirmed, declining to discuss the subject matter of the meeting. The AD did not want to be identified, referring further questions to BIIF executive director Lyle Crozier. Crozier couldn’t be reached for comment by press time.

Based on how other leagues in the HHSAA have dropped sports in the past 10 days, the writing could be on the wall.

At least two of Hawaii’s five high school leagues, the OIA and the Interscholastic League of Honolulu, have already made decisions to cancel all or portions of their fall and winter sports schedules. Meanwhile, the Maui Interscholastic League administrators will decide the fate of several of the league’s sports in a meeting Wednesday, according to a Tweet sent by the Maui News’ Robert Collias.

Word of the OIA’s decision leaked just two days after the HHSAA announced it was canceling state championships for nine sports: air riflery, basketball, bowling, cheerleading, cross-country, canoe paddling, soccer, swimming and diving, and wrestling.

Those state championships were set for March, while the unaffected sports, as of now, are a combination of postponed fall sports and traditional spring sports: baseball, football, golf, judo, softball, tennis, track and field, water polo and volleyball.
