Heavy rain is in the forecast for today and numerous weather advisories have been issued by the National Weather Service for the Big Island.
A wind advisory is in effect until 6 p.m. today.
Northeasterly to easterly winds of 20-30 mph are forecast with gusts of up to 50 mph.
Winds this strong are capable of downing trees and causing power outages, and motorists are advised to use extra caution.
A high surf advisory also remains in effect until 6 p.m. today.
Surf of 7-to-10-feet in height is expected along east facing shores.
Expect strong breaking waves, shore break, and strong longshore and rip currents making swimming difficult and dangerous.
Beach-goers, swimmers and surfers should heed all advice given by ocean safety officials and exercise caution. Boaters should expect recreational surfers and body boarders using harbor channels to access surfing areas.
And a winter weather advisory is in effect until 10 a.m. today for the summits of Maunakea and Mauna Loa.
A wintry mix of freezing rain with periods of snow is expected, and there could be additional snow accumulations of up to two inches on the summits.
A winter weather advisory means that periods of snow, sleet or freezing rain will cause travel difficulties. Be prepared for slippery roads and limited visibility and use caution while driving.
The Maunakea Access Road was closed Friday afternoon at the Visitor Information Station due to the winter weather advisory and hazardous road conditions.
