UPDATE: Police ID victim in fatal shooting in Hilo

Hawaii Island police have identified the male victim whose body was found shot in a vehicle this morning at the Puainako Town Center in Hilo.

The victim is identified as 41-year-old Benjamin Craig Davidson of Hilo.

An autopsy was performed this morning and concluded Davidson died from multiple gunshot wounds. The manner of death was determined to be homicide.

Detectives with the Area I Criminal Investigation Section are continuing this second-degree murder investigation.

They are following up on leads and are looking to question the operator of a white two-door-sedan that was seen in the area of the victim’s vehicle and then leaving the parking lot. This individual should be considered armed and dangerous.

PREVIOUSLY

Police are investigating an early morning shooting that left a man dead in the Puainako Town Center in Hilo.

Officers responding to a report of gunshots in the area shortly after 4 a.m. found an unresponsive man in a late-model, dark-colored Chevrolet sedan in the parking lot.

The victim was taken to Hilo Medical Center where he was pronounced dead. His identity is being withheld pending the notification of the next of kin.

An autopsy is scheduled for this morning to determine the exact cause of death.

No suspect is in custody. Detectives have, however, received video footage from businesses in the area for review. Additionally, a witness reported observing a light-colored sedan leaving the area soon after hearing the gunshots.
