Police arrest 22 for DUI

During the week of Dec. 7-13, Hawaii Island police arrested 22 motorists for DUI. Three of the drivers were involved in traffic accidents. None were younger than 21.

The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, 10; South Kohala and South Hilo, four each; Puna, two; Hamakua and North Kohala, one each.

So far this year, there have been 953 DUI arrests compared to 1,034 during the same period last year, a decrease of 7.8%.

There have been 738 major accidents so far this year compared to 935 during the same period last year, a decrease of 21.1%.

To date, there have been 15 official fatalities compared to 24 fatalities for the same time period last year, a decrease of 37.5%.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
