There is $6,000 available for 2021 through the Wayne “Big Dog” Joseph scholarship.

Scholarship applications are now available via email at rarkin24@hotmail.com.

Joseph was a teacher, cross country and track coach, mentor and runner for more than 20 years. He died in 2013 but his legacy lives on. His wish was to help high school runners in their pursuit of a college degree. With the help of Richard and Virginia Alderson, this scholarship has been awarded since 2006 and continues today.

Four $1,500 scholarships will be given to four runners that best meet the criteria set forth.

To be eligible, students must be a graduating senior attending a two- or four-year college, have a grade-point average of at least 2.5 and must have been a runner on the cross country or track team during their high school years. Volunteer activities and community service is also an important factor, as well as financial need.

Applicants must complete an application and submit it by April 11, 2021.

To be selected means the student-athlete has demonstrated not only a willingness to make the sacrifices necessary to excel in his or her running activities, but also strives toward excellence in all aspects of school and community endeavors.

Joseph always said, “Nothing gives me greater pleasure than to see young people enjoying life through sports participation.” He was happy to watch the explosion of athletes entering into cross country and track and field programs at the school level.
