John Kanui, 65, of Kailua-Kona died Sept. 28 in Granite Bay, Calif. Born in Hilo, he was a retired sergeant first class in the Hawaii Army National Guard, retired supervisor for the state Department of Transportation Highways Maintenance Division, worked for the Hilo and Kona Seaside Hotels and member of Ka Hoku Ao Malamalama. Visitation 4-6 p.m. Monday, Nov. 16, at Dodo Mortuary chapel. Funeral service at 6 p.m. Visitation again 9-11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 17, at Dodo Mortuary. Graveside service and burial to follow at Hawaii Veterans Cemetery No. 2. Casual attire. Flowers welcome. Seating limited, masks and social distancing required. Survived by son, Shaun Keoni (Kristy) Kanui of Peoria, Ariz.; daughter, Jennifer (Todd) Farrell of Lithia, Fla.; brothers, Edwin (Tiki) Kanui of Hilo and William Kanui, III of Oregon; sisters, Lucille Morris and Margaret Hill of Oregon; four grandchildren; nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.
